Why the Simple Multiplication Fails
Here’s the deal: you see a list of individual odds and assume you just multiply them. Wrong. That method ignores the hidden decimal conversion that turns fractional odds into true probability.
Step-by-Step Conversion
First, grab each line’s odds — say 5/1, 3/2, 7/4. Convert them to decimal: (5/1)+1 = 6.0, (3/2)+1 = 2.5, (7/4)+1 = 2.75. No more guessing.
Next, multiply those decimals together. 6.0 × 2.5 × 2.75 = 41.25. That’s your raw accumulator multiplier.
Then, to get the final payout, apply your stake. A £10 bet becomes £412.50 if it hits.
What About Odds in Decimal Form?
Look: if your bookmaker already gives you 6.00, 2.50, 2.75, skip the conversion. Just multiply straight away. The trap is mixing formats — mix a fractional with a decimal and you’ll miscalculate.
Adjusting for the House Edge
Betting operators embed a margin. To strip it, reverse-engineer the implied probability: 1 ÷ decimal odds. Sum those probabilities; if they exceed 100%, the overround is the excess. Subtract it proportionally before you multiply.
For our example: 1/6.00 = 16.67%, 1/2.50 = 40.00%, 1/2.75 = 36.36%. Total 93.03%. The margin is 6.97%, so each probability is trimmed slightly before recombining.
Common Pitfalls
And here is why many lose: ignoring the “+1” in fractional odds, using mixed formats, and forgetting the stake multiplier. One slip and the whole accumulator evaporates.
Also, beware of “each-way” bets. Those are two separate accumulators — win and place — each needing its own calculation.
Quick Formula Cheat Sheet
Decimal odds: Multiply all. Fractional odds: Convert to decimal first, then multiply. Stake: Multiply final decimal by your wager.
House margin: Convert to implied probabilities, sum, adjust, then back to odds before multiplying.

Bottom Line
Stop guessing. Convert, adjust, multiply, apply stake. Do that, and you’ll never overestimate an accumulator again.
